Turkish Music: Ramazan Güngör and His “Kopuz” with Three Strings

Ramazan Güngör, one of the unforgettable folk poets of the Muğla region, is a prime example of how the richness of Turkish folk music stems from regional melodies and masterful performers.

Ramazan Güngör, one of the most accomplished players of the kopuz—an ancient Turkish folk music instrument—in the 20th century, began his life story in 1924 in the village of Kadı, near Fethiye. Although there was no school in his village, he taught himself to read and write through sheer determination. After becoming disabled following an accident, he dedicated his life to music and thus became an artist recognised and respected throughout Turkiye.
