When Ali Selmi Andak passed away at the age of 89, Turkiye lost one of its important composers. Honoured with the title of ‘State Artist’ in 1998, Andak composed many memorable pieces over a period of more than 60 years, and these compositions were etched into the minds of Turkish listeners through performances by popular singers.

With nearly 800 compositions to his name, Andak’s club anthem, composed for Galatasaray Sports Club for its 75th anniversary, alone secures his place among the unforgettable names. Every week, when Galatasaray Sports Club’s teams take to the pitch, all the fans sing this anthem. Meanwhile, popular artists such as Sezen Aksu, Nilüfer and Coşkun Demir are associated with his other famous compositions.

Of course, it is difficult to select just three pieces from such a great composer’s works, but I shall make such a selection this week. I hope you enjoy listening.
