Turkish Music: “Sev Dünyayı” / “Love The World”

You’ve probably heard the song ‘We Are The World’, which left a lasting impression on the music world. Performed in 1985 by some of the era’s most beloved artists, the song was written and recorded to draw attention to the famine in Ethiopia between 1983 and 1985.

This moment, featuring legendary names such as Michael Jackson, Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper and Diana Ross, has never been replicated in the Western music world to this day.

The Turkish music scene, meanwhile, experienced a similar moment in 1992 with the song ‘Sev Dünyayı’. The track ‘Sev Dünyayı’ (meaning ‘Love the World’) brought together the era’s greatest vocalists. Written by Cem Karaca, the song was performed with great sincerity by artists including Muazzez Abacı, Ajda Pekkan, Fatih Erkoç, Sezen Aksu, İbrahim Tatlıses, Belkıs Akkale and Neco.

Today is 23 April, the anniversary of the opening of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, the foundation of the Republic of Turkiye. As it was presented to children by our founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, on this day, it is celebrated annually in Turkiye as the National Sovereignty and Children’s Day. For that reason, I am sharing this song, titled “Love The World”, with you all, dedicated to all children.
