There are so many magnificent monuments from the Roman and Ottoman periods in Istanbul that many 19th- and 20th-century buildings—which would attract considerable attention in other cities—can go unnoticed by both residents and visitors alike.
Every time I walk through Istanbul’s backstreets, I come across striking late 19th- and early 20th-century buildings, and my admiration for Istanbul grows a little more.
The vast majority of these buildings may go unnoticed due to the narrow streets, the positioning of shop signs, and the fact that they have not been restored for a long time. Here, a report by CNN Travel explains how a very important building, which is more in the public eye, has been reintroduced into the city’s cultural landscape.
